Preface

Among them, Swami Rishabhdev pilgrim and Mahavir Swami were the last and 24th Pilgrim. Pilgrim means the one who connects with the ocean of the world. The Pilgrim tradition ends after Mahavir Swami. Birth Introduction

Mahavir Swami was born on Chaitra Shukla Trayodashi 599 BCE in a royal family in Muzaffar Nagar district of Bihar’s Kundpur district of Vaishali Republic. His father’s name was King Siddhartha and his mother’s name was Trishala.

After his birth, his father’s wealth and food all increased, hence he was named Vardhamana. He is also called Vardhamana Mahavir. He was incomparable in force in the world, so he became famous in the world by the name of Mahavir.

Childhood and Education

The childhood of Vardhamana Mahavira was spent like a prince. All the resources were available to him at home. Vardhamana’s education had started at a very young age. Soon he became proficient in all the sciences and arts.

He was a philosopher, and his interest in religion was innate, so he was moving towards detachment despite being the lord of all opulence. He was married to a princess named Yashoda, but his mind was not in the household. At the same time, he was not indifferent to his responsibility towards the subjects, the state, and the family.

Homelessness and detachment

After the death of his parents at the age of 30, Vardhaman took the permission of his eldest brother Nandivardhan, breaking ties with the home, and adopted the religion of ‘Yeti’. ‘Yeti’ religion was the Jain religion propounded by the pilgrim before them.

After taking initiation, he was absorbed in rigorous penance for 12 years. After severe penance, he realized the truth. As a result, he attained the rank of ‘Kaivalya’. He was forever free from sorrow, from worldly pleasures, sorrows, attachments, etc. Only the experience of bliss and supernatural happiness is ‘Kaivalya’. This is the ultimate height of meditation.

As a Pilgrim

According to Jainism, there were 23 Pilgrims before Mahavir Swami. Swami Parshvanath was a Pilgrim 250 years before him. According to Jains, Pilgrims are the ‘Sadgurus’ of the community. They are born wise. He is born to give the initiation of welfare to the living beings of the world. That’s why he is called ‘Jagatguru’. Other disciples also get the post of ‘Kaivalya’, but other Pilgrims cannot be. Mahavir Swami became a Pilgrim after attaining the rank of ‘Kaivalya’.

Dissemination of Knowledge

For a pilgrim the whole world is equal. He wants to save the unhappy human beings of the world by giving them happiness and peace. Similarly, Mahavir Swami has engaged in the propagation of realized knowledge. His teachings were spread equally from the common man to the royal family.

The then King Maharaja was also initiated by the religion propagated by him. The rulers of the states like Anga, Magadha, Kaushambi, etc. received knowledge from him. Mahavir Swami opened the doors of knowledge equally to all Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras, men, women, etc.

Expansion of Followers

During the reign of Mahavir Swami, knowledge spread and spread everywhere. According to the facts given in some Jain religious texts, during his reign, Gautam Pramukh had 14 thousand sadhus, Chandanbala chief 36 thousand sadhvis, Anand Pramukh 1 lakh 59 thousand worshipers, Jayanti chief 3 lakh 18 thousand worshipers. There were 11 Gandhara Kevali in front of him, who was his great and chief disciple.

Salvation Period

Mahavir Swami attained salvation in Pavatpuri at the age of 72 in 527 BCE after spreading Jainism widely. The city of Pava near the statehouse is still a big pilgrimage for the Jain people. This place is about 10 km from Bihar Sharif station.
