This festival is called “Holikotsav”. Holi is derived from the word Holika. The word Holika is derived from the Sanskrit word which literally means roasted grain. In ancient times, when the farmer used to harvest a new crop, the first thing was offered to the deity. Therefore the new grain was offered to the fire and roasted. Everyone used to eat that roasted each other together. In this happiness, a festival was celebrated to offer new grain to the deity. Even today the festival of Holi is celebrated in rural areas with this tradition.

Holi Festival Changed in Color
Before Lord Krishna, this festival was celebrated only by burning Holika. New food was offered, but Lord Krishna converted it into a festival of colors. On this day Lord Shri Krishna killed a demon named Putana who came to his house in the joy of Holi celebrations. Later he celebrated this festival as a festival of ‘Rasleela’ and playing of colors with ‘Gopis’. Since then it has become a tradition to play colors at this festival during the day and burn Holi at night.
