Independence Day and Republic Day are very important festivals in the national festivals of our country. Among them, Republic Day also has its own special dignity and pride. Our national and constitutional pride lies in this festival.

Meaning of Republic Day

Republic is also called democracy, which means the state of the people or the rule of the people. The day, when the Constitution of the country came into force is called Republic Day. The Constitution of our country came into force on 26 January 1950 AD. That’s why this date is called Republic Day.

Our country became independent on 15 August 1947 AD. Earlier our country was ruled by kings, emperors, and the British government. After independence, the learned leaders of our country made a constitution to implement the system of democracy in the country, which took about 3 years to make (2 years, 11 months, and 18 days ).

Constitution-making started in 1946 AD and was completed in December 1949. This constitution took place on 26 January 1950 AD, since then Republic Day is celebrated on 26 January every year in our country.

Historical Significance

26 January has great historical significance for us. Even before 1950, this date was celebrated as Independence Day every year since 1930. In December 1920, at the Lahore session of the Congress on the banks of the Ravi river, our freedom fighters declared ‘Purna Swaraj’. So those leaders of ours decided to celebrate Independence Day on 26 January 1930 on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami. Since then Independence Day is celebrated every year on 26 January.

Due to the independence of the country on 15th August 1947 AD, Independence or Independence Day was celebrated on 15th August itself. But our leaders wanted to maintain the dignity of 26 January. So our leaders decided to implement the Constitution on 26th January 1950 to maintain the pride and dignity of 26th January. Since then we have been celebrating the birthday of our constitution or the anniversary of our republic every year on 26 January.

National Level Celebration

Republic Day celebrations are celebrated every year on 26 January by the Government of India at the national level in Delhi with great fanfare. The Indian government starts its preparation several days in advance. On the eve of the republic, the President of the country delivers a message to the country which is broadcast through the media.

The program of Republic Day begins with the salutation of Shaheed Jyoti in the morning on that day, the Prime Minister of the country pays tribute to his martyrs by congratulating the martyr Jyoti lit at India Gate. After that, the President’s ride reaches the saluting platform at Vijay Chowk with royal honors. There the Prime Minister etc. dignitaries felicitate him.

After that, the Republic Day Parade starts which is very visible. Various contingents of soldiers from all the three wings of the army parade with the sound of their respective bands and greet the President. thereafter comes the trolley of weapons used in war, which is equipped with various defense equipment used in the army.

Soon after that various cultural tableaux of different provinces of India are presented which show the unity in the diversity of India. After this, the contingent of students of the country moves forward, showcasing their diverse skills.

Finally, the fighter planes of the air force also merge in the sky showing their unique braking skills. All the above riders start from Vijay Chowk and reach the Red Fort. The long route attracts huge crowds from different parts of the country to Delhi to watch the Republic Day Parade.

Republic Day is celebrated with pomp in the school of Delhi a day before due to the celebration of Republic Day at the national level on 26 January in the country’s capital Delhi. The program begins with the flag hoisting by the Principal of the school. After that different types of games are organized by the students of the school by presenting various programs. Finally, the celebration ends with prize distribution and sweets distribution.

Country and Abroad

Every year on 26 January, the Governor and the Chief Minister begin the Republic Day celebrations with the hoisting of the flag in the provincial capitals of the country. Then throughout the day, various programs go on. Students in schools and colleges celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm. The evening concludes with cultural programs, drama, poetry conferences, etc.

Republic Day is celebrated with great pomp in foreign countries as well. This festival is celebrated with great gaiety by the NRIs in the embassies of India present in every country. The Heads of Government of the respective countries send congratulatory messages to the President and Prime Minister of India.
