Present Continuous Tense with Rules & Examples (Download PDF) – Present continuous tense shows that the action is in the continuation or is going on at present. Formula –

  • Affirmative – Sub + is/am/are + 1st form of Verb (+ing) + Obj.
  • Negative – Sub + is/am/are + Not + 1st form of Verb (+ing) + Obj.
  • Interrogative – is/am/are + Sub + 1st form of Verb (+ing) + Obj.
  • WH Questions – WH + is/am/are + Sub + 1st form of Verb (+ing) + Obj.

1. Affirmative Present Continuous Tense

Read the rules carefully given below:

  • is, am, are + 1st form of verb + ING is used.
  • When the subject is he, she, it, or some singular number, is, is used, and then the first form of the main with ING.
  • AM is used with I.
  • When the subject is you, we, they, or some plural number, are + first form of the main verb + ING is used.

The formula for Affirmative sentences.

Sub + is/am/are + 1st form of Verb (+ing) + Obj.

2. Negative Present Continuous Tense

Read the rules carefully given below:

  • In the present continuous tense, we use is, am, are + 1st form of verb + ing.
  • When we are to use not, we use it between is, am, are + 1st form of verb + ing. Like, I am not going to the market today. He is not taking the examination.

The formula for Negative sentences.

Sub + is/am/are + Not + 1st form of Verb (+ing) + Obj.

3. Present Continuous Tense Interrogative Sentences – Interro Negative Sentences

Read the rules carefully given below:

  • In present continuous tense/interrogative sentences. the helping verb is, am, are is placed before the subject duly and after the subject’s first form of the verb with ING, and a question mark is put at the end of the sentence.
  • In Interro-negative sentences – first comes is, am, are, and then the subject, after the Not, and then the first form of the main verb + ING.

The formula for interrogative sentences.

is/am/are + Sub + 1st form of Verb (+ing) + Obj.

4.  WH-Questions in Present Continuous Tense

  • WH – There are sentences whose answer requires more information. WH – are related, how, who, how many, when, where, why, how many.
  • To form a WH-question, start with the WH-word, then add is, am, are, then Subject followed by the base form of the verb, and only then add the rest of the sentence.

The formula for WH-Questions.

WH + is/am/are + Sub + 1st form of Verb (+ing) + Obj.
