The report by Arjun Sengupta states that 77% of Indians have a daily income of 20 rupees. A report by the NC Saxena Committee states that 50% of Indians live their life below the poverty line.
The Government of India has initiated several programs to reduce poverty, including subsidizing food and other necessities, increasing access to credit, improving agricultural techniques and price reports, and promoting education and family planning since independence.
These measures have helped eliminate famines, cut poverty levels by more than half, and reduce illiteracy and malnutrition to some extent.
