Introduction

Kalyan Singh was born on 5 January 1932 in village Madhauli of Atrauli tehsil in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. His father Tejpal Singh Lodhi was a common farmer and his mother Sita Devi was a household lady. Kalyan Singh was married on 10 January 1952. His wife’s name is Ramvati and he has a son and a daughter.

He had a deep interest in literature and was a creative and sensitive person. He composed 12 songs in the Varanasi jail during the Emergency. BJP’s “Kisan Geet” is also composed by him. Apart from being a teacher, Kalyan Singh also left his mark as an agricultural political and social worker.

Kalyan Singh was R.S.S. from childhood. started going to the branches. The desire to get freedom for the country started to stir in his heart. After getting the country’s independence, he started his career as a teacher after getting higher education. He started learning the tricks of politics by constantly joining the Sangh. In the year 1967, he contested the first election from Jana Sangh from Atrauli assembly and won the assembly and in 1977 Jana Sangh merged with Janata Party in UP. He was made the Health Minister in the government formed under the leadership of Ram Naresh Yadav. Before the 1980 elections, the Janata Party broke up and Kalyan Singh had to face defeat for the first time from Atrauli.

Political contribution

He was elected for the first time as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1967 and took over as the Minister of Health, Uttar Pradesh from 1977 to 1979. From 24 June 1991 to 6 December 1992, he was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. In the meantime, he took many historical decisions. After winning the elections of 21 September 1997, Kalyan Singh was again made CM by the BJP. In the 1998 Lok Sabha elections, BJP won 56 seats, and Kalyan Singh showed his strength.

In 2004, Member, 14th Lok Sabha member for the first time and Chairman Rural Development Committee. When Narendra Modi became the PM in 2014, the party sent him as the Governor of Rajasthan. He became the Governor of Rajasthan in 2014 and Kalyan was also given additional charge of Himachal Pradesh for a brief period from 28 January 2015 to 11 August 2015.

Criticism

Experts of UP politics say that there was a time when he used to hold a special position in the party. But in the year 1999, when he publicly criticized the party’s biggest leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he was expelled from the party. After which Kalyan Singh formed his own National Revolution Party and participated in the assembly elections in 2002.

Political innings in BJP

During the formation of BJP on 6 April 1980, Kalyan Singh was made the State General Secretary. During the late 80s, when the Ram Mandir movement of the BJP gained momentum, he was given the command of the state president. In the Ram Mandir movement, Kalyan Singh began to be recognized as a keynote speaker and an important political figure of the movement. He attacked the government of Mulayam Singh Yadav fiercely and made arrests.

On 6 January 1992, riots broke out in many places in the country due to the demolition of the disputed structure of Karsevaks who had gathered in Ayodhya. Taking all the blame for the demolition of the structure on himself in the evening of the same day, Kalyan Singh resigned from the post of CM. By sacrificing his chair for the Ram temple, Kalyan Singh became a hero of BJP and Hindutva overnight. In the next year’s election, Kalyan Singh won from Atrauli and Kasganj seats.

Former Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Kalyan Singh passed away on 21 August 2021 at the age of 89. He had been ill for some time. His Funeral was performed on 23 August 2021 on the banks of the Ganges at Narora, Aligarh.
